Now in its third year, #GivingTuesday is charitable answer to Black Friday or Cyber Monday. #GivingTuesday is a viral push, often by celebrities or individuals with a big social media following, to donate to a charity.
According to an article from The Non Profit Times, donations reached nearly $50 million on December 2nd — a 45% increase from the previous year. The numbers are estimates from donation processing software, including Blackbaud, DonorPerfect, Network for Good, Razoo, Salsa Labs and Click & Pledge. PayPal hasn’t released their figures yet, but the payment processor pledged to match 1% of donations made through its platform. This was also the first year that crowdfunding website Indiegogo got in on the action.
